Post subject: 2010 install fails with black screen

Well I'll try sending this a third time. I believe this one will get
through, and I believe I know why the others didn't. (1)

2010 Free installation gets as far as the loader, then after I tell it to
install Mandriva, I get a black (not blank - video is still output)
screen. After a minute the DVD spins down and that's that.

I tried no ACPI, safe mode, and even text mode.

This is a Dell XPS 630i with an Nvidia 9800GT and 8GB RAM. 2009.0 and
2009.1 installed fine on this machine. I even tried removing half the RAM
but got the same black screen.

The download is md5 ok, and the disc data is verified after burning.
Tried two different discs. Installation proceeds normally using these
discs on a laptop I have. On this desktop, though, no matter what I try,
I boot to the DVD, I get the loader with the option to install, and after
I hit Enter to install, I get a black screen. Mouse clicks and keyboard
strokes have no effect. I have to kill the machine manually.

Oh, well, 2009.1 is running just fine, but if you have any suggestions
for getting 2010 to install, they are welcome. :-)

When I get home later today I might try unplugging USB items from the
computer to see if one of them is creating the problem. It's happened
before, years ago with another machine.

(1) My original subject was "2010 Free install fails with black screen".
Some quick posts to alt.test showed that it was the word "free" in the
subject that was keeping the post from getting through. This must be some
ham handed attempt at spam filtering by my wonderful ISP. *shrug*

Have you tried 'noapic nolapic' without the apostrophes of course, this

often works with dell machines. If this fails you could have a look at
the Gentoo site for the installation manuals which have a long list of
things to try.

But lookie here, the little popup is telling me that there's a new
distribution available, and asking if I want to upgrade. :-) The last
time I tried this (2009.1) it failed miserably and I ended up pulling out
the old DVD to format and reinstall.

Maybe the procedure has improved. We'll see. *fingers and eyes crossed*

Hope you read the popup very carefully. :(

mdkonline for Mandriva 2010.0 notifies that update to Mandriva 2009.1
is available . . .

We had a similar problem with 2009.1.

Try selecting:
linux-nonfb
You can do this by pressing Esc at boot (and sometimes you have to press it
twice)
If this works, then after the installation is complete, change this in the
CYC, hardware.
Hope this helps

I tried your suggestion and Edward's but no luck. Poking around the
Gentoo site didn't reveal anything interesting.

But lookie here, the little popup is telling me that there's a new

Heheh, it was 2010. :-) Fortunately it went ok this time. There was a
hiccup right at the end, after all 1800+ packages had been downloaded and
installed. A message appeared saying that a process had failed, but from
the looks of it it was just that a popup was supposed to appear,
congratulating me and telling me to reboot. I closed this warning out and
ignored it. Then the blue tray icon appeared, saying that it was looking
for available packages for about 10-12 minutes, so I tried running the
graphical updater and it ran, telling me that whatever was going on in
the tray didn't have a lock on the rpm database, so I crossed my fingers
and rebooted. So far, things look ok. I have to reset all my widgets 'n'
stuff.

There was a small scare when several panel icons were hugely distorted,
but this was due to an icon set I've been using with 4.2. Setting regular
old Oxygen icons fixed that.

I'd hoped to format and start clean, but I guess this'll do until 2010.1.
